Concerns with body image is not a new topic for anyone, no matter the gender. We are all a work in progress. Whether we want to put it on or get rid some extra padding, it is top of mind for many of us. We are told to love ourselves as we are, but then we are also told to use this new drug, new gym, new tool, new surgery, and on and on, just to look a little better. But what is on the other side of that unnatural tool fed to us via mass marketing? Why not push the food industry to use cleaner ingredients or at least less ingredients? Oh yeah! Money. In this America, we are fed ads for new delicious, and most often, unhealthy treats, but told the cure can come in an easy self-administered injection, just once a month. FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE! That is a commitment. Most of us are completely incapable of that kind of commitment, which is probably why we are where we are.
I am by no means judging anyone for doing what they feel is right for them. I just find the system to be flawed and worth discussion.
This series of five silver-gelatin prints were made in the traditional style of photograms. By dipping my belly and chest into the developer and then pressing my body into the light sensitive paper, I am showing the part of my body that I am most ashamed of, while producing a reproducible image that is slightly different with each pressing.
